Ground Screws FAQ
What are ground screws?
What are ground screws?
Ground screws are steel foundation anchors that are installed into the soil using high torque equipment to support structures without concrete. They function similarly to helical piles but are designed for fast installation and immediate load capacity. Ground screws are commonly used for decks, houses, solar arrays, modular buildings, signs, fences, light structures, and many others.
Are ground screws a good alternative to concrete footings?
Are ground screws a good alternative to concrete footings?
YES!!
- Build immediately– no waiting on concrete to set
- Fast installation– install in minutes with no excavation or curing time
- Lower total cost– reduced labor, equipment, and material costs
- Versatile– performs in a wide range of soil conditions and climates (including winter)
- Environmentally friendly– lower carbon footprint with minimal site disturbance
- Removable & reusable– ideal for temporary or relocatable structures
- Code-compliant– evaluated under ICC-ESR-4226, helping streamline permitting
Are AGS ground screws approved in my area?
Are AGS ground screws approved in my area?
AGS ground screws are widely accepted because they are evaluated under ICC-ESR-4226 for compliance with International Building Code requirements. Final approval is determined by the local building department and project engineer based on soil conditions and project loads.
Do ground screws work in frost or cold climates?
Do ground screws work in frost or cold climates?
Yes, ground screws perform well in cold climates when at least two thirds (2/3) of the thread is installed below frost depth. Because they are embedded deep into the soil, they are commonly used in northern regions where frost heave is a concern. Proper design and embedment depth ensure stability.
How much weight can a ground screw support?
How much weight can a ground screw support?
The load capacity of a ground screw depends on soil conditions and the ground screw diameter. In many soils, individual screws can support thousands of pounds of axial load when properly engineered. Load capacities are listed in Table 5, Page 13 of the ICC-ESR-4226.
Can ground screws be installed in rocky soil?
Can ground screws be installed in rocky soil?
Yes, ground screws can often be installed in rocky soil, but some sites require pre-drilling or obstruction removal. Installers may use rock augers or drilling tools to penetrate dense or rocky layers before installing the screw. Review our installation instructions for details.
How long do ground screws last?
How long do ground screws last?
Our ground screws are hot-dip galvanized steel designed to resist corrosion for decades. Actual service life depends on soil conditions and coating thickness, but properly specified ground screws are designed for long-term structural use. AGS warrantees our ground screws for 25 years, and life expectancy is 50+ years.
Can ground screws be removed or reused?
Can ground screws be removed or reused?
Yes, one advantage of ground screws is that they can often be removed and reused. This makes them a popular foundation option for temporary structures, modular buildings, and projects where minimal environmental impact is important.
Do I need to have utilities marked?
Do I need to have utilities marked?
Yes. Call 811 from anywhere in the country several days prior to installing your ground screws and your call will automatically be routed to your local one call center. Utility companies that have potential facilities in the area of your installation site will be notified of your intent to dig. Each affected utility company will send a locator to mark the approximate location of your underground utility lines. This typically occurs within 2-3 working days. It is recommended you install ground screws at least 18 inches from either side of marked lines.
What installation equipment is required, and can I install them myself?
What installation equipment is required, and can I install them myself?
· Ground screws require low-speed, high-torque drivers(handheld electric or hydraulic units for skid steers, mini skids, or excavators)
· DIY-friendly– many homeowners and contractors rent installation equipment from AGS or our distributors
· Engineered projects require proper equipment to ensure correct depth, alignment, and performance
Is a permit required?
Is a permit required?
In many cases, yes, a permit is required for any permanent structure, regardless of whether it’s supported by concrete or ground screws. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, project type, and load conditions.
AGS ground screws are evaluated under ICC-ESR-4226, which helps streamline the approval process with many building officials. In some smaller or non-structural applications, permits may not be required, but it’s always best to confirm with your local building department.
How long does it take to install ground screws?
How long does it take to install ground screws?
There are several factors that impact the installation time of ground screws, including diameter, length, soil type and the installation equipment you are using. In most cases, they can be installed and ready to load in less than 10 minutes.
What is the environmental impact compared to concrete?
What is the environmental impact compared to concrete?
AGS ground screws have a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional concrete foundations. Installation requires no excavation, no curing time, and no water, which minimizes site disturbance, noise, and mess. Because there’s no concrete, you also avoid the high carbon emissions associated with cement production.
Ground screws are removable and reusable, making them ideal for temporary or relocatable structures and reducing long-term site impact. The surrounding soil remains largely undisturbed, helping preserve natural drainage and root systems
Ground Screws are Best For
Deck Foundations
Deck Foundations
Perfect for residential and commercial decks where speed and precision matter. Ground screws eliminate digging and concrete, allowing same-day installation with immediate load-bearing capacity—ideal for tight schedules and clean job sites.
Fencing & Posts
Fencing & Posts
A fast, consistent solution for fence posts, gate systems, and signage. Ground screws provide straight, stable anchoring without the variability of hand-dug holes, reducing labor while improving alignment and long-term durability.
Pergolas & Outdoor Structures
Pergolas & Outdoor Structures
Ideal for pergolas, pavilions, and shade structures where aesthetics and structural integrity are both critical. Ground screws create a clean foundation solution with no visible concrete and excellent long-term support.
Solar Installations
Solar Installations
Widely used in ground-mounted solar arrays due to rapid deployment and minimal environmental impact. Ground screws allow installers to avoid concrete, reduce site disturbance, and maintain adjustability during layout and install.
Temporary or Modular Structures
